And humidity change, which moves the timber itself.<\/p>\n<p>Most households defend against the first and ignore the other four, which is why tables age unevenly.<\/p>\n<h2>Heat Is the Underrated One<\/h2>\n<p>A hot dish on a finished surface can produce a white bloom that is considerably more stubborn than a water ring, and heat can damage the adhesive under a veneer, which polishing cannot reach.<\/p>\n<p>A trivet with feet, sized to the dish, is the answer. A four-inch coaster is not a trivet: a heavy casserole on a small disc concentrates both heat and weight at its edges.<\/p>\n<h2>The Practical Measures<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Coasters where drinks are set down, and enough of them<\/li>\n<li>Trivets sized to the dish, with feet, for anything hot<\/li>\n<li>Placemats for plates, which handle abrasion rather than heat<\/li>\n<li>Wipe spills immediately, not at the end of the meal<\/li>\n<li>Keep the table out of direct sunlight where possible<\/li>\n<li>Keep it away from a radiator<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Absorbent coasters that remove the water rather than pooling it, of the kind at <a href=\"https:\/\/thirsty-stone.net\/\">thirsty-stone.net<\/a>, handle the drinks side; the rest needs different tools.<\/p>\n<h2>Sunlight<\/h2>\n<p>Ultraviolet light fades and yellows finishes and bleaches or darkens timber depending on the species. It is gradual and it is permanent.<\/p>\n<p>The visible signature is a table lighter or darker under a bowl that has sat in one place for years. Rotating what stands on a table, and using blinds during the brightest hours, both help.<\/p>\n<h2>Humidity<\/h2>\n<p>Wood moves with moisture content, expanding and contracting across the grain. Very dry indoor air in winter opens joints and can split solid tops.<\/p>\n<p>A table beside a radiator experiences the worst of this. Moderate indoor humidity, roughly forty to sixty per cent, suits both furniture and people.<\/p>\n<h2>Cleaning<\/h2>\n<p>A slightly damp cloth and drying immediately handles most of it. Not soaking, not standing water, and not abrasive cleaners.<\/p>\n<p>Avoid silicone-based sprays, which build up and complicate any future refinishing. Use a polish or wax appropriate to the finish, sparingly, a few times a year.<\/p>\n<h2>Tablecloths and Protectors<\/h2>\n<p>A felt-backed table protector under a cloth handles heat and moisture together, and it is the practical solution for a table used daily by a family.<\/p>\n<p>It also hides the table entirely, which is the objection. Most households compromise: bare for ordinary use, protected for anything involving hot dishes.<\/p>\n<h2>Accept Some Wear<\/h2>\n<p>A table that is never marked is a table nobody uses.
